As of May 1st, 2026, the long-awaited sequel to the beloved The Devil Wears Prada hit theaters across the globe. This fabulous continuation reunited adored actors such as Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci in a witty, yet emotional movie. Much like its predecessor, The Devil Wears Prada 2 dove deeper into what ambition, success, and reinvention look like within today's heavily digitized age of social media and technology.
The original 2006 film introduced audiences to Miranda Priestly, the commanding editor-in-chief of the fashion magazine, Runway. Her stone-cold demeanor and impossible standards put her in the running for one of cinema’s most unforgettable bosses. However, the iconic framework of her rigid character took a turn in the sequel, as she is no longer the untouchable queen of the magazine world.
As magazines, much like Runway, struggle to stay relevant and technology and social media begin to morph the fashion industry into something new, Miranda finds herself fighting to not only preserve her publication, but also her legacy. In the height of the drama to keep it all alive, Justin Theroux makes his appearance as Benji Barnes, a tech magnate whose exponential influence over the media threatens to upend everything Miranda has built.
Andrea “Andy” Sachs comes into play at the center of it all. Once named another one of the “Emilys”, Miranda’s long line of failed assistants, Andy starred in the initial film as the reluctant assistant of Miranda's who escaped into a world of her own. As the sequel opens, Andy is now an accomplished journalist facing uncertainty with her career in a rapidly changing landscape of media.
When an unexpected firing lands her back at Runway, Andy is forced to confront the same world of fashion that she left behind all those years back. Hathaway delivers a layered performance, portraying a woman who has matured yet still fights with questions about compromise, purpose, and even her own professional identity.
One of the movie's most satisfying developments is the evolution of Emily Charlton. Emily, who is now an extremely successful executive within the luxury fashion industry, may just hold the key to saving Runway. Throughout her performance, Blunt steals the screen with her razor-sharp wit as well as her character’s newfound confidence, which create some of the most entertaining yet also straining moments.
Along with Streep, Hathaway, and Blunt, Stanley Tucci also returns to his role as Nigel, whose warmth and subtle humor once again ground the film. As a trusted confidant to both Miranda and Andy, Nigel provides some of this sequel's most heartfelt looks into true loyalty and creativity.
When it comes to fashion, humor, and timeliness with today’s day and age, director David Frankel and author Aline Brosh McKenna capture the sharp dialogue and luxurious visuals that made the original so special. However, beyond the clever one-liners, The Devil Wears Prada 2 explores intriguing themes of the decline of traditional media, women navigating leadership, tensions between art and technology, and even the cost that comes along with ambition. These intense contemporary themes give the film some added depth, making it feel like more than just a nostalgic reunion.
Though the film is still new, early reviews have been largely positive, praising the film for balancing nostalgia with fresh storytelling. Many critics have particularly highlighted the chemistry between the original cast as well as the sequel’s thoughtful commentary on the constantly changing worlds of both fashion and journalism. Fans have embraced the film as well, potentially helping it to become one of the year’s largest box-office successes.
As a whole, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a stylish, smart, and surprisingly touching sequel that proves some stories deserve their second chance. In reuniting its iconic cast and tackling timely issues with both wit and sophistication, the movie honors the original while confidently taking a step towards the future. For longtime fans, it’s a triumphant return to Runway, as well as a reminder that in fashion, literally and metaphorically speaking, reinvention is always in style.
