On August 30, 2026, a new age of space knowledge commenced. Beginning with the idea in 2010, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope finished its construction on November 25, 2025. Now, it is finally ready to hopefully answer humanity’s essential questions about the universe’s existence. Named after the incredible Nancy Grace, NASA’s first chief astronomer, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will be one of the greatest telescopes ever made, topping the incredible Hubble Space Telescope. But what is its purpose?


According to NASA, the Roman Telescope’s main purpose is a topic widely debated and discussed within the world of astronomy: dark energy. Dark energy is a phenomenon commonly known to space scientists as a hidden, invisible force causing the expansion of the universe today, speeding it up over time for some unknown reason. Finally, that reason may be partially discovered. The Roman Telescope will be able to figure out whether dark energy is constant or dynamic, which could help reveal what this mysterious force really is.


According to renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, “Dark energy is a mysterious pressure in the vacuum of space that acts in the opposite direction of gravity, forcing the universe to expand faster than it otherwise would.”


Well, the mystery of dark energy may no longer be a “mystery” anymore with the developments of the Roman Telescope, but Roman is not just a telescope for one purpose. Because of the incredible range of the new telescope (a field view 100 times longer than the Hubble telescope), Roman will measure billions of galaxies and intergalactic objects like supernovae to figure out why the universe is expanding so quickly. It will also aim to discover collections of exoplanets for further research.


However, even though the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will surely influence a new age of space discovery and change the way scientists think about the laws of physics itself, that is not to say there will not be challenges along the way. Space and science are filled with obstacles, such as the time it takes to gather this new information as well as interpret what it means. The universe continues to lead us to explore and discover new information about humanity and how we came to be, but it also leaves several unanswered questions that may never be solved in our existence. That is not to say that we will never answer impossible questions.

As humanity continues to build and create things like the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, we will continue to learn more about the world and continue to solve problems about our universe. At least for now, thousands of people watching the launch of the Roman Telescope will be able to know that they were there to witness what may be the start of a new age of space discovery as we know it.
