Police Step Up Traffic Enforcement as School Begins

The Henderson Police Department and Clark County School District Police have increased traffic enforcement around Henderson schools—including elementary, middle, and high school—since the start of the 2026-27 school year. This was an effort to improve traffic safety and deter dangerous driving in school zones.

The increased presence comes as Nevada’s new Assembly Bill 6 takes effect. Beginning July 1st, the law increases fines and demerits points for traffic violations committed in active school zones which make violations more costly for drivers.

Rather than simply warning drivers, officers are focusing on behaviors that can put students and other pedestrians at risk. During school drop-off and pick-up, that includes illegal U-turns, stopping or parking in travel lanes, speeding through school zones and failing to stop for crossing guards.

The enforcement extends beyond the immediate school zone. Henderson's “Ride Smart Stay Safe” initiative is also targeting e-bike and e-scooter safety around middle and high schools. Officers are targeting behaviors such as speeding, riding in unsafe areas, failing to wear helmets and operating devices that do not comply with local regulations.

At the same time, Henderson police are participating in a statewide “Joining Forces” distracted-driving campaign. The department received a $174,500 grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety for enforcement running from August 14 through September 1, with officers targeting drivers who use cellphones or other electronic devices while operating a vehicle.

For students and families navigating Henderson roads during the school day, the increased police presence is expected to continue as officers focus on keeping school zones and routes to and from campuses safe.
