Obsession: The Psychological Horror-Thriller of the Summer

Released in theaters on May 15, 2026, Obsession took the entertainment world by storm, breaking numerous records and earning a brief position on IMDb’s Top 250 list. These feats were achieved despite running on a $750,000 microbudget and relying on the direction of Curry Barker, the co-creator of a sketch comedy YouTube channel. Prior to the film’s overwhelming success, the majority of the featured actors were far from household names, working primarily in more niche TV and entertainment circles.

This captivating indie horror-thriller contains themes of dark psychology, illusory consent, psychological dependency, and ingenuine romance. Obsession has a somewhat tame beginning. The story revolves around a group of four friends and coworkers: Bear (Michael Johnston), Nikki (Inde Navarrette), Ian (Cooper Tomlinson), and Sarah (Megan Lawless). The protagonist of the movie, Bear, is characterized as a socially awkward man who has a long-time crush on Nikki, but avoids confessing his feelings in the interest of the friend group. Bear buys a gift for Nikki, a One Wish Willow, which allows the user’s deepest desire to come true. Desperate for a change in his and Nikki’s relationship, Bear breaks the ominous branch himself, wishing for Nikki to fall deeply and unconditionally in love with him.

The same night, Nikki stays at Bear’s house and freakishly switches to a new persona, but ultimately brushes it off and apologizes to Bear, claiming that she was under the influence. In the following days, Nikki’s interest in Bear increases drastically as she begins to initiate conversations, meticulously observe his actions, and express sudden romantic interest. Bear realizes that his wish has come true and begins to take advantage of the situation, openly accepting the intense affection and newfound interest without questioning the true mechanics of his wish.

As time passes, doubt and fear regarding their relationship clouds Bear’s mind. Nikki’s actions become exponentially horrific, ranging from going completely stationary in Bear’s absence, to taping the front door shut, and even cooking Bear’s deceased cat with “love” for lunch. As Nikki’s disturbing behavior continues, Bear’s best friend, Ian, attempts to intervene and assist Bear, all while Bear struggles to conceal his past actions and tackle the true mystery of the One Wish Willow. Nikki’s actions stray further and further away from anything considered normal, going ballistic when she’s not in Bear’s proximity and even harming herself in a party setting. 

Among this messy situation, Nikki glitches through her personalities, showing her true persona fighting against herself, and warning Bear to end it before it’s too late. Bear discovers that the only way to lift the curse was to end his own life or have someone else alter the wish with another, the latter unfortunately failing. Eventually, Bear attempts to seek assistance from Sarah in the middle of the night; however, a stalking Nikki murders Sarah in front of him. Fighting back his own emotions, Bear returns home to a gruesome scene involving Nikki and Sarah’s corpse. Ian attempts to intervene once more, but falls short after becoming Nikki’s second victim of the night.

After witnessing Nikki completely lose any semblance of sanity, Bear decides to end it once and for all. After an overdose, this perturbing film ends with Bear dying in Nikki’s arms. His death causes Nikki’s original persona to break free, and she opens her true eyes to all three of her closest friends dead in a torn-up house. To top it all off, the credits scene is paired with the eerie Forever, by The Little Dippers and Nikki’s disturbing sobs.

For a sophomore film, Obsession is nothing short of a phenomenal movie. The thriller was influential enough to create viral trends all while multiplying the initial budget by nearly 670 times. The director, Curry Barker, has hinted at a sequel to Obsession in the future that will delve into the supernatural universe of the One Wish Willow, so the anticipation is on. This movie definitely had an interesting take on the age-old saying, “be careful what you wish for”.
