On Saturday, April 11th, the Coronado Women’s Swim Team competed in an invitational against 70 California high school teams at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. Coronado made another sweeping victory and proved that all 70 high school teams were no match to their own with a score of 358 points to a mix of scores that got close, but did not touch our women’s team.
Having won 2nd out of all the teams marks yet another success in the books for the Coronado women’s team this season and shows that, wherever they compete, they bring their absolute best. This comes to no surprise as Coronado's women swim team isn’t just one that focuses on putting the effort into their swimming skills, but also their relationships.
“One of the strengths our team has is the friendship and support system we have built between everyone,” Senior Kirra Fenton explained. “It makes everything better because no matter what, we are able to be there for each other and make decisions for the team, not just ourselves.”
No matter how skilled a team is, their true strengths come out when their bonds are strong, and that is exactly what these Coronado Cougars have invested in. It isn’t just about the winning, or their swim time, but how they are learning to connect and bring out the best in each other. Through that, their team has found success in every high, and every low. Though this meet certainly qualifies as a high, for some seniors like Fenton, it left some mixed feelings.
“This meet was very bittersweet,” Fenton said. “This meet is always the highlight of the season so as a senior, it was sad to see it come to an end but I was able to have the best time in one of my events that I haven’t been able to improve in for a while.”
The truth is, being part of a team is truly becoming part of a new community, and even becomes a family for some. The relationships you build within that team can have either positive or toxic dynamics. Joining and participating in a team such as this one where they not only compliment each other’s strengths but also compliment each other’s personalities is in part what continues to make this team so strong. For seniors it can be bittersweet to realize in these last few meets that they aren’t going to be part of this special team again, but there is no doubt that with the skills they have learned here at Coronado, not to mention a team ranked 1st in the entire state, that they will move onto even greater highs as they hold their team with a special place in their hearts.
“My hopes for upcoming meets are to keep getting closer with the team and bringing them together so I can be proud of what I am leaving behind,” Fenton said. “I am very excited to see what the rest of the season brings and hopefully be able to get a fifth State Championship win for my team.”
Speaking of upcoming meets, the next swim meet will be this Saturday, April 18th, at 11:30 am, located at the Henderson Multigenerational Center. There, they will be facing off against Arbor View, and based on their recent meets, this one will undoubtedly mark yet another victory. However many points they score, their need for support from their Coronado community never dwindles. As they continue to move forward to even larger championships and Regionals, it is essential that we continue to support them so that they can secure yet another swim season in victory.
