On May 8-9th, 2026, the Coronado Track and Field team participated in the 5A Southern Regional Championships, where they not only were on the podium, but some took the gold home. Tallied all together, the men's team finished in eighth place with 40 points, and then our women’s team dominated the competition scoring second place with 117.5 points over the past couple years.
While there are so many phenomenal athletes at regionals from jumpers, sprinters, and long distance runners, to throwers, a big shoutout and highlight goes to the women’s sprinters and relay teams.
“I qualified for both of my individual events, which are the 200m, and the 300m,” senior Jiselle Dudley said. “I got 4th place in the 200m, 1st place in the 300m, and my relay team and I got 4th for the 4x100, and 2nd for the 4x200.”
To be in the big leagues, all of these athletes push their endurance, conditioning, and speed to the limit to come out on top. Track and Field includes both a solid foundation of physical and mental strength. These athletes don’t just show up, they put the work in day-by-day, and that is reflected in their performance.
“I was nervous going into regionals because all the hard practices led up to regionals,” Dudley said. “It’s literally go big or go home. The training regiment was speed training and working on our blocks and form.”
“I’ve been training since September for this so I felt really ready,” senior Ahtziri Gadzuric said. “I usually have two practices a day, starting at 1:30 p.m. and finishing by 6 p.m.”
The pressure is on for our athletes as this weekend, May 15-16th, 17 athletes are going to Reno, NV to compete for the State Championship title. While there are nerves, there is also excitement as our athletes will be running for it, and represent themselves, their family, and friends. Cougars, support our track and field team as they compete for the 2026 season State championship whether you're on the sidelines in Reno or supporting from back home.
