Coronado Softball Faces Fierce Competition in California

California Competition//Collecting hits, the Cougar’s bats were on fire over Spring Break collecting 21 hits over 2 games. Throughout the games they continued to support each other and build chemistry.

The Coronado softball team traveled out of state to California to play competitive teams on March 20th and 21st, showing strong effort on both offense and defense. The Cougars secured a narrow 7-6 victory in their first matchup against Lakewood High School before falling 4-0 in their second game against Charter Oak High School.

Coronado opened the tournament with an explosive offensive performance, collecting 15 hits and rallying to secure a one-run win. The Cougars battled through multiple lead changes, responding each time with clutch hitting to regain momentum. A big inning helped push them ahead for good, highlighting the team’s ability to perform under pressure.

“For our first game I feel like we competed really hard to stay in it,” sophomore Bella Basta said. “It wasn’t an easy win, but we kept pushing and made it out on top.”

Leading the way offensively was Summer Gilliam, who drove in four runs on four hits, including a home run and a double. Multiple players contributed at the plate, with consistent hitting throughout the lineup helping Coronado maintain pressure offensively. Strong defensive plays, including a double play, also helped the Cougars hold onto their lead.

“Our bats were alive this game and we hit really well,” Basta said. “I felt like our defense brought that same energy too because we made very little errors.”

As the Cougars got to the second game, they once again showed discipline at the plate, out-hitting Charter Oak High School. Despite collecting more hits, the Cougars struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities and fell short.

“I feel like we weren’t focused in on that game as much because we had gone to Disneyland and the beach days prior and we were pretty tired,” Basta said. “Hopefully we’ll get our energy back up for the games coming up.”

Even in the loss, Coronado demonstrated strong defensive moments, turning two double plays and limiting earned runs. Aubrie Sisler led from the circle, pitching complete games while keeping the opposing teams contained.

Across both games, the Cougars showed resilience, depth, and the ability to compete in high pressure situations. With contributions from multiple players and strong communication on the field, the tournament served as a valuable experience as the team continues to build chemistry and prepare for the rest of the season.
