Coronado Cross Country is having unmatched levels of success. From the very first race to now, the Cougars are pouncing on the nonstop action within the athletic world. On Saturday, October 11th, the Coronado Cross Country Team went to Veteran’s Memorial Park. There, success followed the race with nineteen personal records, and the varsity boys team placing in 8th, as well as varsity girls in 2nd place. The JV boys and girls team both placed second place as well.

Additionally, on the Coronado High School Veteran’s Memorial board, three athletes broke school records from previous students on this particular course. Brookelynn-Miller in the varsity race placed first, Jacob Strum placed 5th and Gigi placed 5th on the girls spot as well. The high level of commitment from each athlete has ultimately led to success for the cross country team to be successful–in both races and practices–which impacts the performances in races.

According to 12th grader Ivy Evans, "Types of practices affect my performances in races all of the time. We do a lot of speed workouts which can help perform in races all of the time. Easy/moderate runs on the other hand help to maintain fitness, but it’s harder to make progress in my times doing only these kinds of runs.”

The types of practices help aid athletes in their performance, but another factor, the type of terrain makes a difference as well.

Evans continues, “The Veteran’s Memorial course is definitely one of the more difficult courses that we run in Southern Nevada. The terrain of the course tends to slow down the times all together. There is, however, a competitive advantage to having these different terrains. If we can push ourselves, especially during the uncomfortable parts, we can place better overall.”

The terrain of the course brings its own pros and cons, but the Cougars are resilient no matter what. Come support the team on Saturday, October 18th, where the JV runners will finish up their season and varsity prepares for regionals as well as state.
