Crowned & Complete// Dominating at the world's biggest stage, Lionel Messi finally takes home the trophy after many years of trying. After making a World Cup final in 2014 and not being able to finish the job, this victory is the missing piece Messi had been missing from his legendary career.

For close to three decades, Lionel Messi has remained one of the most dominant athletes in the world. From his early years at FC Barcelona to his success with Argentina later on in his career, Messi has consistently found ways to perform at the highest level. His career is not defined by just one incredible season or trophy. Instead, what marks his dominance is him being able to stay great year after year.

Messi first became a superstar at Barcelona at the young age of 18, playing with greats of the game like Ronaldinho and Andres Iniesta. Messi spent 17 seasons at FC Barcelona, where he scored 672 goals in 778 matches. During his time at the club, he won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions League Trophies, and many other trophies. Even though he was great for many years, one year stands out during his time at Barcelona. In 2012, Messi scored 91 goals in a calendar year, breaking Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals from 1972. He set a record that still stands and appears to be really hard for someone to break in the near future. What makes Messi's career even more impressive is how many elite abilities he has. Even though he is the second-highest scorer of all time and has the best goals-to-games played ratio in history, many people know that goal scoring isn't his best trait. Messi is known to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, dribbler the sport has ever seen; he is also an elite passer. Earlier in his career he also had incredibly fast speed, with the ability to fly past defenders with the ball looking like the ball was glued to his feet. Messi also has the most assists in history, and the second-most free kicks scored of all time, only two short of tying for first place.

Even other professional players recognize how dominating Messi is. During a 2025 match between AC Milan and Napoli, Milan defender and an all-time great Kyle Walker told his teammate Joao Felix, “Just pass the ball; we are not Messi. No one here is Messi; pass the ball.” This comment shows how great players that have never even played with Messi look up to him and recognize him as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Walker later explained that his point was that the players need to trust the team's scheme and tactics, and that there are only a few players in the world, like Neymar, Ronaldo or Messi that can take the ball by themselves and completely change the game, with Messi being the biggest example of this.

His team trophies and goals are already enough to put him in the conversation for one of the greatest players of all time, but Messi has done something no other player has been able to do. Messi won the Ballon d’Or eight times, which is the most prestigious individual award in the sport. Messi is also the only player in history to win the Ballon d’Or four times in a row, winning it from 2009-2012. He did not have the start he wanted representing his country, Argentina; he went through a trophyless drought towards the start of his career, and even said the national team was not for him. He would come back stronger than ever and win a Copa America in 2021, followed by an incredible performance at 35 years old in the World Cup of 2022 to take the trophy home. Messi would end up making three World Cup finals, winning one of them and winning 2 Copa Americas on top of that.

Ultimately, Messi’s greatness is not just about the number of goals he has scored or trophies he has. His greatest achievement might be how long he remained at the top of athletes while continuing to adapt to how soccer changes day by day. From scoring 91 goals in one year to winning the Ballon d’Or in three different decades, his longevity, consistency and ability to perform in important matches over and over again has created a legacy that will be remembered for ages and is extremely difficult for future players to match.
