You’ve just gathered your snacks and taken your seat in the movie theater to see Wicked: For Good. What are you expecting to see? Soaring vocals, gravity-defying moments, and the same touching magic that have made Wicked a global phenomenon. What you don’t see—not without looking closer at least—is the extraordinary machinery behind every costume, set, and cinematic decision. Here’s a closer look at the behind the scenes innovations that brought Wicked: For Good to the big screens.
Even in a period of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) dominance, the production team for the film went above and beyond, building hundreds of practical set pieces, many being fully functional. For example, the Emerald City wasn’t created just by computer; much of it was constructed on soundstages using a network of tools. From steel scaffolding wrapped in acrylic emerald panels to catch and reflect light to programmable LED facades embedded in the buildings providing the city with its iconic shifting green glow, the team certainly left nothing untouched. Their reasoning for this hard work? Such real-world elements allowed the actors, like Arianna Grande and Cynthia Erivo, to interact naturally with their surroundings and environment.
Along with this, the production team certainly did not shy away from perfecting the Shiz University interior, building the massive atrium as a full-scale structure. To make this possible, they utilized devices such as functional mechanical staircases that could reconfigure their positions. Furthermore, ceiling rigging systems were used to operate floating lanterns and movable magical props. As a result, the entire film had an environment that felt alive even before any VFX (Visual Effects) enhancements.
When it comes to costuming, Wicked: For Good stole the show. The costumes throughout the entire film were not only clothing, but technological achievements by the talented production team. A direct example is the transformation dress Elphaba can be seen in during the film. Through textured fabric clusters creating a shifting, spell-like pattern under light and shape-memory mixtures woven into the hem, allowing the skirt to flare on command, the dress was brought to life. Even something as simple as a piece of clothing was engineered to appear supernatural without having to rely on digital manipulation.
Another key example of the deep technology behind the characters' costuming is Glinda’s floating gown. The iconic garment included micro LED fiber weaves that illuminated subtly during spells and a light cage structure, designed with 3D printing to keep the volume without the extra weight. The bodice was also made to be compatible with a harness, engineered so seamlessly that the mechanics weren’t even visible in aerial scenes. These were made meticulously in order to hold up under the pressure of movement, close-up cinematography, and intense choreography.
As for lighting and cinematography, it proved to be one of the film's biggest challenges. In order to blend the practical and digital elements seamlessly, the lighting team had to get creative. As for the emerald light technology, a palette of emerald-centered LED rigs was developed to adapt in real time to skin tones. Reflective panels that diffused the light throughout the set were also embedded to echo the city’s magical glow. Accompanying that, motion-triggered spotlights synced to choreograph the legendary musical numbers.
For all its sparkle, Wicked: For Good was built on the work of hundreds of skilled craftspeople, such as engineers, designers, riggers, seamstresses, VFX artists, and technicians. Like any movie, at least any good quality movie—everything you see is more than just from the wave of the wand. Each magical moment was a direct result of careful planning and complex mechanics that hid beneath the surface, allowing the audience to simply believe in and be entertained by the enchanting world.
