NCAA March Madness 2026!//Exciting the crowds, the Michigan Wolverines win the 2026 NCAA Championship. It was a close game against the Connecticut Huskies (UConn), with the Wolverines winning 69-63. Although this was quite the game, there was a large buildup to get to this point.
March Madness starts with the top 68 college teams. Teams are seeded and ranked from 1-16 based on the region they reside in (East, West, Midwest, and South). Brackets are then set up, and it is single-elimination, meaning that after you lose, there is no way to redeem yourself. The 4 lowest-seeded play first. Other than that, it is a system that allows many underdogs and teams that haven’t shown up all season to have a chance, causing massive unpredictability. Favored by many over any other sports event, it is one of the most popular tournaments in the world. Created by Henry V. Porter, he wanted it to be a true tournament, created equally for everyone.
The ‘26 season was looking bright for Michigan, Illinois, Arizona, Florida, and Duke. These teams were playing extremely well and were top contenders this year. Looking into specific players, Cameron Boozer for Duke averaged 22.5 points per game, making him one of the best forwards this season. He helped his team get into the Elite Eight, but they lost to UConn. Another impressive performance was AJ Dybantsa, a forward for Brigham Young University, who had an amazing freshman year projected as a top-3 player. Brayden Burries for Arizona also had an outstanding season with 16.1 points per game.
Although many of the predictable teams were making it through rounds, there were some surprising twists and turns to this series. One of the biggest shockers of the tournament was the Iowa Hawkeyes beating the #1-seeded team, Florida. Florida has a great basketball program and has previously won the NCAA title for the 2025 season. The score was 73-72, making it one of the most thrilling games of the tournament. Another twist was the Texas Longhorns making it to the Sweet 16, being the only double-digit-seeded team to do that. Lastly, the VCU Rams had a shocking comeback against North Carolina after being in a 19-point deficit and coming back to win in overtime.
Making it to the final four, Michigan, UConn, Arizona, and Illinois pushed through and wanted the trophy. Arizona lost to Michigan, and Illinois lost to UConn. The finals were held at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts. In the first half, Michigan was winning 32-29, showing great moves on the defensive side. Although they were ahead, there was still not a large gap between the two teams, making it a close game. UConn was fouled 11 times. Morez Johnson Jr. was the leading scorer with 10 points for the Wolverines. Going into the second half, Michigan went on a 14-4 run, allowing the gap to grow larger. In the final 20 minutes, Michigan held UConn to only 31% shooting. Michigan won its first championship since 1989, led by coach Dusty May.
This was the most-watched men’s NCAA final since 2019, averaging 18.3 million viewers. March Madness is a great tournament, allowing for every team to have a chance. Michigan took the trophy this year, their first time in 26 years. They played an outstanding season and proved it through their performance in this championship.
