On April 8th, 2026, Coronado’s track and field team had its second home meet of the season. Many events occurred, including sprints – which contains events like the 100m, 200m, and 400m, distance events such as 800m, 1600m, and 3200m, and field events as well, including pole vault, long and triple jump.

This meet was a huge success for the Coronado Cougars. At the meet, Jiselle Dudley broke the 200m school record, with a new time of 24.45 seconds. Additionally, five total new athletes qualified for regionals – which is great news for the track and field team. This means there are more athletes to potentially qualify for the state championships.

Racing for many student-athletes can be a tough mental game to overcome. Some athletes utilize a racing strategy for each race, however, each event is different.

According to Senior Brooke-Lynn Miller, “Each event I race has its own sort of aspect to it. In the 800, I try to focus on getting quick off the line and running for the first 200 meters hard. On the other hand, in the 3200, I tend to be more conservative and patient since it’s a longer race. So, strategy does matter a lot…You can only control yourself and not others.”

However, despite the mental obstacles that are a part of any sport, including track, having a supportive team like Coronado’s, can make race anxiety a little less daunting.

“Having supportive teammates helps a lot during racing. Hearing people cheer for you is so nice to hear and feel. I always feel so happy to see my teammates before or after races because everyone hypes each other up. It’s a great environment to be in!” Miller explains.

The track and field season is not over yet. Come support the Coronado Cougars at the 2026 Skyhawk Invitational at Silverado High School. It’s a two day meet, taking place over Friday, April 17th and Saturday, April 18th. Let’s run Cougars!
