Swifties–avid fans of Taylor Swift–from every part of the world tuned into the New Heights Podcast, eager to hear the news they had been awaiting for months: The release of Swift’s latest album, The Life of a Showgirl. The reveal of Swift’s new album generated excitement like no other, with 1.3 million viewers listening live. It was set to debut on October 3rd, allowing for 2 months of pure anticipation to build. Just as predicted, when the clock struck midnight on that momentous night, Swifties from everywhere flooded Spotify and Apple Music, already analyzing every word and forming their opinions. However, controversial takes have dominated every social media platform, with some listeners applauding the lyrical genius, while others deemed the album a disappointment.
“I thought it was horrible. It sounds completely like a Disney Channel movie soundtrack,” said junior Kate Wood. “The lyrics make no sense. I wish she stuck with her old type of music.”
One take from the “anti-album” side of the internet is that the album lacks the usual Taylor-like vocabulary beloved by so many fans. One of the biggest distinctions from Swift’s music and other famed artists is her use of literary devices, complex analogies, and lyricism, all of which seem to be missing from The Life of a Showgirl. Fans seemingly miss having to think harder about the underlying meaning of her lyrics and feel as though, in this album, the whole picture is just “handed to them” through Swift’s more simplistic choice of words. However, other fans seem to think that this new album encapsulates a new “era” for Taylor, one that all Swifites should support.
“She’s just happier now, and I think it's so unfair that people think her being happy means she's making bad music,” said junior Lillian Horowitz. “Her music has always showcased her talent, and this album hasn't changed that. I guess I just think she doesn't have to be miserable to make good music.”
Some people feel as though Taylor’s new album is solely a reflection of a newer, happier version of herself. A life with Travis Kelce, her star athlete lover and newly named fiancé, seems to be the cause of this sudden change in her music. Swift is widely known for her tragic heartbreaks and her deep understanding of love lost. However, after beginning her relationship with Kelce, fans began to notice a shift in her persona. Many Swifties believe this is long overdue, and that Swift finally deserves her happy ending, even if it means the end of the relatable heartbreak anthems.
Whether it was through love or love lost, Taylor Swift's new album was nothing short of record-breaking, accumulating 249.9 million streams in just one day. People’s opinions have taken the internet by storm, but one thing remains the same: Taylor continues to leave a lasting impact on the music industry. If you haven't already, give the album a listen, and share your thoughts with the rest of the Swiftie Fandom!
