Students, environmental activists, and communities around the world came together this April to celebrate Earth Day. This annual event, falling on the 22nd of April, is dedicated to raising awareness about our planet. This year’s theme, centered on sustainability and climate action, sparked widespread participation online and in-person. From local cleanups to global livestreams, participation did not fall short. With millions eager to learn how to make a difference, schools and organizations spent weeks organizing initiatives and campaigns encouraging people to rethink their everyday habits. On the big day, social media platforms filled with eco-friendly tips, personal reflection, and thoughts on the state of the environment. However, conversations about sustainability revealed a mixed public opinion from optimism to skepticism.
“I think it’s important, but I don’t feel like just one day is enough,” Junior Humza Hussan said. “People post about it but then just go back to their old habits.”
One common critique about Earth Day is that it can be seen as performative. Many people and companies promote sustainability but don’t make these changes long-term. Critics argue that real environmental progress takes constant effort. They point out that issues such as plastic pollution, deforestation, and climate change require consistent advocacy and action, not just a single day of social media posts and temporary initiatives. Despite this, many still believe that Earth Day plays a crucial role in spreading awareness and education about the ongoing issues, including the Sustainable Development Club’s very own Vice President, Ashna Shirodkar.
“I think that the holiday is definitely a good starting point,” Shirodkar said. “Not everyone knows how to help the environment and Earth Day gives people a chance to share tips people can actually use in their daily lives.”
Supporters emphasize that even small actions like reducing waste, conserving energy, or switching to more sustainable products can add up when large numbers of people are doing them. Simple changes can make a real difference: bringing reusable water bottles or using a cloth bag instead of single-use plastics, turning off lights when you're not in a room, and unplugging electronics when they're not in use. Taking shorter showers to conserve water, walking, biking, and carpooling when possible can also reduce carbon emissions. Even being mindful about what you buy, like supporting eco-friendly brands that make ethically sourced products or thrifting clothes can contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle.
Whether through local efforts or global campaigns, Earth Day continues to encourage necessary conversations about sustainability and the future of our planet. While opinions may differ on its effectiveness, the message is evident: caring for the environment is more crucial than ever. If you haven't already, consider making those small changes in your everyday habits, and encourage others to do the same!
