It’s 2025, and skinny jeans have gone in and out of style, but you know what is still here? The TV show, Grey’s Anatomy. After 20 years, it is still producing seasons, marking one of the longest-running shows ever aired. Grey’s Anatomy is an important show, but it has served its time and should let other shows take the spotlight.
In October of this year, Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy is airing, and people are wondering when the show will finally come to rest. They have a reused idea of killing people off, so why not just let the show die, along with those once beloved characters? The same idea over and over again, along with constant tragedies in each season just gets tiring. There is no spark left, nothing so different anymore, that there either needs to be a total show reboot, new resurgence of ideas, or the show needs to be on its way out after this last season. Grey’s Anatomy began with 5 main characters that were the new residents of the hospital, Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Alex Karev, George O’Malley, and Izzie Stevens, and out of the original cast, Meredith Grey was the only one to remain throughout most of the show, while the rest of them either moved on with their lives or died in the show. It’s time for us, as the audience, to move on from a show that is no longer truly resembling Grey’s Anatomy.
Arguments have been made that even though Ellen Pompeo has stepped back from her role as Meredith Grey on screen, the show will continue her legacy, making it feel like she’s still there. However, it’s called Grey’s Anatomy for a reason, not Bailey or Shepherd’s Anatomy. Amelia Shepherd and Miranda Bailey are amazing characters in the TV show, but they are in the show more than Meredith Grey, which makes me believe that if the series is going to continue, then the name should change. If the hospital in the show could change its name to Grey-Sloan, then why shouldn’t the show's name be changed as well?
While she stepped back, Pompeo will still be a narrator for Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy, because her character moved to a different hospital. If Grey isn’t one of the central characters when the show is literally her name, why can’t fans or critics of the TV show move on to other medical dramas?
On October 9, 2025, Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy will premiere on Hulu. Grey’s Anatomy already has a legacy and a prominent role in the television industry, but they have lost the spark to make it interesting and inventive. Tune into Hulu, or say goodbye to the once-beloved series.
