Coronado Softball vs. Arbor View

On April 27th, senior varsity softball player Summer Gilliam and her team came up just barely short in a tightly contested 9-8 loss game against Arbor View High School. Competitiveness and pressure remained level throughout the game; not a dull moment was had. 

“I think we all played for each other instead of playing for ourselves, and that gave us lots of energy,” Gilliam said. 

That collective mindset was what allowed for the team to stay composed and productive at the plate, even as the intensity rose inning by inning. 

“We just kept hitting, which kept the momentum up throughout the game,” she said. “It helped us stay in it and keep pushing every inning.”

Even when facing a team they felt slightly intimidated by, Gilliam said the team refused to let the moment overwhelm them and continued to perform with excellence and good composition. 

“We just didn’t stop fighting. We continued to play even though we knew the team was better than us,” she said.

Despite the narrow defeat, Gilliam focused less on the final score, and more on how the team performed together as a unit throughout the game. When she was interviewed, she glowed with pride and exuded positive energy, even when she was discussing the loss. In response to a question asking if there was anything she would redo during the game if she so had the chance, Gilliam gave a sweet statement. 

“No, honestly, we played a great game and I’m proud of my team,” she said. 

Despite their loss, Coronado put up a good fight. It was a game that kept the audience on the edge of their seats, that’s for sure!
