Academics to Audiences: Abby Watanabe

Coronado’s AP Academy is known for its prestige and excellence, and Senior Abby Watanabe exemplifies this perfectly. Coronado is a school of creativity and intellect, home to those who embrace challenges. Watanabe has spent the last four years of her high school experience combining her passions for music, leadership, and community through various AP courses and a wide range of extracurriculars. Watanabe continuously displays purpose and zeal, from uplifting her peers through Hope Squad to performing on iconic stages.

Watanabe found joy in organizing Hope Squad events such as three Rainbow Runs and Illuminate the Night. These were all times when she watched her school and community members unite for something incredible. In addition to her passion for leading and serving others, for Watanabe, music has always been a driving force in her journey. One of her most unforgettable experiences was traveling to New York in 2024 to perform Fuga y Misterio at Carnegie Hall, an accomplishment she describes as surreal and extremely meaningful.

“I would love to relive the Honor Orchestra Concert,” Watanabe explained. “This ensemble was made up of approximately 50 musicians from across CCSD, and we had multiple rehearsals to prepare 30 minutes of music. The pieces were majestic, our conductor was so amazing, and it was such a perfect way to end five years of Honor Orchestra. All my friends and family came to cheer me on, and I felt so loved and grateful.”

Watanabe also recalls two of her favorite memories this year—painting crowns for senior sunrise and celebrating the victory of passing AP Calculus. This year brought many achievements for Watanabe, and ones she held especially close. She is thrilled to have performed at Boston Symphony Hall, another milestone in her musical journey, and she takes pride in being featured in the 89052 Zip Code Magazine.

Watanabe’s success has been shaped by those who stood by her. She credits her family for always encouraging her ambitions and supporting all her endeavors. Her closest friends have also been constant companions through academics and other pastimes, making even the busiest days brighter. She also expresses deep gratitude for the staff at Coronado, who have guided her in the best ways.

“I’m so grateful to my family for always supporting my endeavors, and I’ve loved going through high school with my best friends,” Watanabe said. “Whether it’s school or side quests, we’ve had so much fun and support each other in everything we do.”

As graduation approaches, Abby plans on taking on her college journey with the same enthusiasm and passion that have defined her time at Coronado. She shows that success is not only defined by academics but also by the impact your accomplishments have on others. Coronado is proud to celebrate her and is excited to see the impact she makes as she leaves her school with nothing less than a promising future ahead.
