From Wednesday, October 21, to Saturday, October 24, the theatre department performed A Night on The Bill. With two casts, the play ran for two nights, allowing each cast to perform twice. Because the theatre was packed with friends and family members, there was nearly a full house on opening night.
Kicking off the night was the Madrigals choral group, who performed two songs before the play began. A Night on The Bill consisted of two parodies: Drop Dead Juliet, and Mmmbeth. Rather than displaying a traditional Shakespearean performance, this play was all about comedy and attaching a lighter meaning to Shakespeare's dark classics.
“A Night on The Bill is a comedic twist on Shakespeare's great plays,” Theatre Member and Junior Kyla Gaftoi explained. “Act one is all about Romeo and Juliet… except Juliet has had enough and wants to rewrite her own story. Act two will dive into Macbeth, except it’s full of laughter and upbeat scenes.”
Rehearsals for the fall play began in August and concluded right before the performances began. The theatre department spent many hours preparing their show to ensure that cast members felt ready and confident when it was time to step out on stage.
“We’ve rehearsed every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and a few Saturdays since August 27th,” Gaftoi said. “Rehearsals usually go until 4:20 p.m., but these past few weeks, since it’s dress rehearsals, we’ve stayed at school until 6:00 p.m.”
Theatre is a team effort, and it requires all of the cast members to work together in order to put on a show. The long rehearsal hours allowed for the cast to bond and create memories, both on and off the stage.
“Theatre is like my second home, and being able to be a part of this production, with these people, has made me truly appreciate everything,” Gaftoi explained. “I love these people and this amazing show.”
Since the fall play has come to a close, the theatre department is now shifting its focus towards upcoming events. These performances are leading up to Shrek The Musical in February, so be sure to attend Coronado's next theatre productions!
